Greetings from the Garten!

What's new in the world of gardening? You've probably noticed the explosion of color in echinacea (coneflower). Many hues of orange, yellow, and burgundy have joined the original and well-loved purple coneflower. Other tried and true perennial favorites are bursting forth on the scene with new colors and sizes, promising new features such as “extended blooms”, “improved disease resistance”, “intoxicating fragrance”, and more. Next time you visit, take a relaxing walk through the display gardens and see some of these new varieties. We use the gardens to see if these plants live up to their promises, and also to test for hardiness and deer resistance.

You’re going to love the Gifte Haus’s new selection of indoor/outdoor home and garden decor. Relaxing bistro sets, inspiring garden art, ceramic pots and home accents will bring new excitement to your living spaces. Check out the wonderful fragrances in botanical candles and the collection of soy candles (due to arrive mid-April). The new gift soaps are fantastic!

Take good care, and we’ll see you in the garten.

2007 Perennial of the Year

The 2007 perennial of the year is Nepeta “Walker’s Low”. A favorite of ours for years, this plant is deer resistant and a delightful combination of color, texture, and fragrance.

Plant Profile: Tree Peony

Are you one of those people who have yet to witness the wonder of the tree peony? With their huge, ruffled, satin-like flowers, bright colors and hardiness to zone 3, this is one plant that every garden needs! Many years ago in ancient China the only person who could own a tree peony was the Emperor himself. Now slightly more available, and without any penalty for planting, there are very few flowers that can compete with a tree peony in full bloom. A mature plant (4'-5’ tall) can have over a hundred flowers, with each bloom reaching 10” in size! Call to reserve a color (red, yellow, orange, blue, or pink).

Does your group need a fundraiser? We are happy to work with you to create a fundraiser that meets your needs. Some examples include poinsettia sales at Christmas, spring hanging baskets and clematis or roses in the summer. Contact us to discuss your ideas.

Have a Garten Party!

If you are planning a special event, remember to ask about reserving our garden pavilion. You can also plan a nice outing for your group, complete with a picnic lunch. Give us a call, we’ll help with the details.

Expanded Organic Fertilizer Line

A healthy root system makes a healthy plant. We recommend using an organic fertilizer or amending your soil to assure that your garden's nutritional needs are being met. Our fertilizer line has been expanded to include various types of organic fertilizer for specific plants. This line also includes smaller bags so you can purchase only the amount that's right for you! Don’t worry, we’ll help you figure out what you need. And you’ll feel good knowing it’s organic!
